Emerging Professionals - National Capital Region

What can you do to incorporate more GREEN into your life?  How can you help out your neighbors and the DC community?

As NCR EGB Community Outreach Coordinator, I am working on developing a summer-long Education & Outreach program on Urban and Community Gardening, focusing on how to live a more fully sustainable lifestyle by greening your home as well as helping contribute to the greening of others' in your community.  The program is in the earliest stages of development, but might feature educational & volunteer events such as....

Urban Gardening in DC: Learn how to run a garden - plant, grow and harvest even on a very small plot of land, kitchen or apartment roof!

Green Building Construction: See how builders incorporate plants and natural materials into their building projects. Ex: Straw Bale Construction, Green Roofs, Living Walls

Community Gardening: Give back to the community by helping harvest fresh produce for local food banks, because everyone deserves a healthy meal.

IF YOU LIKE ANY THESE IDEAS OR HAVE OTHER SUGGESTIONS, PLEASE POST THEM HERE OR EMAIL ME AT LSIMPKIN@GMAIL.COM. THANK YOU!!!

I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU IN THE GARDEN THIS SUMMER

I like all of the ideas. Moving food production away from large, but isolated, farming operations into more compact vertical farms is a pretty interesting concept as well.

There are ample volunteer opportunities, it seems, in this area. I will try and look into educational resources. The economic, fiscal, public policy, health, logistical, etc. aspects of this issue interests me.
